1 (22F) graduated last week. Small liberal arts college in Vermont, like 200 people in my class. I invited my dad (56M) because my therapist said I should "give him a chance" and I was feeling guilty about how distant we'd been.

He confirmed he was coming. Said he was proud. All the normal stuff parents say. Show up to the ceremony and he's got this whole setup. Like a guy with an actual camera on his shoulder and someone holding one of those fuzzy microphone things. He's doing this thing where he's narrating into the camera about "my daughter's big day" and "watching her achieve her dreams."

Here's the thing though. He hasn't asked about my major in two years. Called me maybe three times this semester. Missed my thesis presentation that I literally begged him to Zoom into.

But now he's got his YouTube face on and he's crying for the camera and hugging me while this crew films it. My friends are staring. My roommate's mom asked if I was on a TV show or something.

After the ceremony he wanted to film "follow up content" of us getting lunch together. Kept having them re-do shots of him hugging me. At one point told me. to "look more emotional" because my face wasn't showing enough.

I just. Left. Told him I had plans with friends which was true anyway. He's been texting me saying I ruined his video and embarrassed him in front of his "team" and that he spent money on the crew. My sister (19F) sent me his YouTube video. It's called

"Emotional Father-Daughter Graduation Reunion" and in it he talks about how we've "been through so much together" and how he "never missed a moment of my college experience." The comments are all people saying he's such a good dad.

I don't even know what I'm asking here. Am I wrong for leaving? He did show up. That's more than he usually does.

This person continued to reflect on her experience

rawcravinggf OP The worst part is I keep thinking about how I should've just played along. Like he drove six hours to be there which is more effort than he's put in since I was probably 12.

My mom (they're divorced) said I should've expected this because "that's just who he is" and I shouldn't have invited him if I wasn't prepared for the performance.
  • 12
But idk. Part of me thought maybe this time would be different? And I feel so stupid for thinking that.
  • 13
The video has like 50k views already. He monetizes all his content. So that's cool I guess. My graduation is making him ad revenue.

Commenters had this person's back, and chastised Dad for stealing the spotlight

mrblanketyblank This is WILD. Absolutely inappropriate on his part to make this graduation about HIM instead of YOU. He's such a piece of work.... He didn't "show up", he literally used you for content. He showed up for himself, not for you.

catari Show your therapist that video and ask if that's what they meant by giving him a chance. Then find a new therapist.

WomanInQuestion You could always post a comment on his YouTube video telling his audience your side of his narrative.

Carbonkit I don't think you're wrong for leaving. Can you imagine. showing up to someone else's important event that's supposed to be about/for them, with a small film crew focused on yourself, and just lying about how close you guys are to their face. Then asking them to redo
  • 18
interactions and pretend you guys are closer than you are and fix their facial expressions. Then blaming them for not playing into it more and ruining your video and embarrassing you. Then using the footage anyway and faking a relationship with that person. Because that's not normal
